(Reuters) – Russia’s military capabilities in the Arctic are a strategic challenge for NATO, which needs a strong allied presence in the region, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday. while visiting Canada.

“The importance of the High North is growing for NATO and for Canada, because we are witnessing a Russian military build-up with new bases, new weapons systems,” said the official, who was speaking to the alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Cold Lake, Alberta.

“The geopolitical situation has evolved over the past few months, and therefore, knowing that Russia is a growing concern for all of us, it is timely for us to share with the Secretary General and with NATO all that the Canada does through NORAD,” said Justin Trudeau, referring to the organization that monitors North American airspace.
