Talking about his departure in season 19, Harmon said: “What’s always drawn me here is the character I’m playing and keeping him fresh and challenging. Story-wise, this character went the way he went I thought it was honest and fine.” As a reminder, Gibbs stayed in Alaska after a long, hard case because he “found some peace there.” A return to the successful series was always very likely. This is followed by his second statement: “I’m not retired… As far as I know, the character lives in Alaska.”
So Gibbs hasn’t quite said goodbye to manhunting just yet, which of course keeps the hope alive that fans will see him again. In the past, characters like Ziva David have been drawn back to the series after they had actually left.
