Are the French allowing themselves more and more things in bed? Do they give in more to their fantasies? This is what this new study, carried out by JOYclub, a company specializing in the field of inclusive and sex-positive online dating. Conducted among 640 JOYclub members (men, women and non-binary people aged over 18) shortly after Valentine’s Day, the survey reveals that nearly 8 out of 10 French people (more precisely 77%) have already participated in a threesome. “This is the sign of a marked evolution towards diversified sexual experiences”assures the company.

Furthermore, 17.4% of new JOYclub members in France expressed a preference for threesomes with two women and one man, compared to 10% for threesomes with two men and one woman. More generally, “group activities and more inclusive sexual experiences are increasingly popular,” according to the company.

How to explain this sexual tendency?

“For some people, this fantasy of threesomes resonates with a need to feel loved and admired. Being the object of desire of two people represents an affirmation of our capacity for seduction, which nourishes self-esteem and provokes a strong sexual gratification”explains Maëlle Marchandon, sexologist and sexuality educator.

According to her, the threesome has the particularity of “allowing you to see and be seen at the same time”. “It also awakens all the fantasies linked to identification: the fact of seeing other people having pleasure can lead us to immerse ourselves in their experience, and to take pleasure by proxy”, she adds. It can also be a “way to escape the limits of traditional heterosexual sexuality and go beyond classic sexual scripts”concludes the specialist.

Are the French ready to experience more open relationships?

This desire to promote more openness, flexibility and diversity in sexual relationships has also been noted in the romantic relationships of the French. Still according to a JOYclub study, if 10.43% of French JOYclub members say they are in exclusive relationships, 8.11% say they are experimenting with open relationships and 1.24% say they are testing polyamory. “These figures illustrate a growing diversity in relationship models, moving away from traditional monogamous frameworks”estimates the company.
