The country’s crisis team reported 1159 new infections from Friday to Saturday. This is only just below the annual record of 1177 new infections on Wednesday. But it’s definitely enough to reach the top spot in Austria …
Effects for Upper Austria?
At a late hour, Federal Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg (VP) and Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) presented the government’s new phased plan on Friday, with the main focus in future on the number of intensive care patients. There are two levels 4 and 5, currently we are in level 1 – a utilization of the intensive care beds of 10 percent. And what effects does this plan have on a “crisis area” like Upper Austria? The state crisis management team does not yet know that: “The state’s crisis management team is only aware of the media announcements from Friday night. To date, we have not had any specific requirements, ordinances or decrees from the federal government. “
Two critical districts
Currently, two districts, Gmunden and Braunau, are threatened with exit controls; these are regulated in the federal high incidence decree – this should not be changed. 32 Upper Austrians are currently being treated in an intensive care unit, with 34 or more patients being checked because the incidence in both districts is over 500.
The crisis team attributes the high number of cases in Upper Austria mainly to the education sector and families. The incidence front runner is currently the community of Grünau im Almtal – the high numbers can be traced back to a political panel discussion. LH Thomas Stelzer says: “Even if the corona numbers are increasing, above all we have to keep a close eye on the occupancy rate in the intensive care units.”
