Emma Stone has more than 50 credits in her filmography but it is in another area that she has encountered the most difficulties during her multi-successful career.
Emma Stone today has nothing more to prove: with more than 50 roles to her credit, the 35-year-old Oscar-winning actress continues to impress. But there was one role that gave him a hard time and led him to rethink his way of playing. – a role in which you have certainly not seen him elsewhere…
After her debut on the big screen in 2007 with the cult comedy SuperGrave, the young actress made a series of films in the genre, from Welcome to Zombieland (2009) to Crazy, Stupid, Love (her first film with Ryan Gosling) in 2011, including Easy Girl (2010). Also in 2011, she tried her hand at committed drama with The Color of Feelings before becoming, the following year, Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield in the role of Peter Parker. She subsequently finds Ryan Gosling for Gangster Squad in 2013, before playing opposite Michael Keaton in Birdman by Alejandro González Iñárritu the following year – a supporting role which gave him his first Oscar nomination.
And then, it’s time for La La Land (2016) by Damien Chazelle, where she reconnects with Ryan Gosling : the acclaimed musical will give him his first Oscar win in a leading role. In 2018, she was nominated again, this time for her supporting role in La Favorite (2018). After a stint at Disney as Cruella in the live action film of the same name in 2021, Emma Stone caused a sensation again last year with her performance in Poor Creatures by Yorgos Lanthimos, which won her Best Actress again at the Oscars this year.
At this point, we can say that the actress has tried her hand in every genre – with success. But it was not in front of the camera that she played her most difficult role but on the stage…
Difficulties on stage
Indeed, in 2014, before La La Land SO, Emma Stone tried her luck on Broadway and played the role of Sally Bowles in Cabaretappearing alongside Alan Cumming in Sam Mendes’ revival of the show, and, as she recalled while promoting Poor Creatures speaking to Variety, it was this musical that was the most difficult moment of his career.
“Broadway was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Do Cabaret. It’s really the hardest thing. I thought it would have been easier, you know, just three hours a day, you’re not on a set, you’re going home. But you have to live like a monk, your voice is always missing – or at least mine is because it’s broken – and it was so hard.”
But this experience also had positive points, she admitted: “I will say it made me fall in love with acting in a whole new way. Plus, I did La La Land right after, so I’ve considered playing it differently since I did it.”
What the actress also learned was a deep respect for those who spend their lives on stage: “I have the most respect for theater actors, because there is nothing more difficult.”

New risks
Ultimately, this complex experience helped him pursue other types of projects like La La Land precisely and pushed him to take more risks – like his role as Bella Baxter in Poor Creaturesa young woman brought back to life, eager to discover the world of which she knows nothing and who embarks on a dizzying odyssey across continents.
But that’s not the only risky role she’s taken on recently. Indeed, we could also find her in the recent series by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, The Curse, broadcast on Showtime in the United States.
As for his future projects, we will find Emma Stone always in front of the camera Yorgos Lanthimos in Kinds of Kindness, an anthology film which tells three stories with the same actors (we will therefore be able to see her bring several characters to life), a feature film which will also feature Jesse Plemons, Hunter Schafer, Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe and the first teaser of which can be discovered below.
She will also star in Cruella 2 as well as Ari Aster’s (Midsommar, Hereditary) next film, Eddington, opposite Austin Butler, Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal.
