Neoen launches construction of the largest battery in the Nordic countries

(AOF) – Neoen has instructed Nidec, a provider of battery energy storage solutions, to start work on Yllikkälä Power Reserve Two (YPR2). Nidec will be in charge of the construction of the project and the supply of containers and battery cells as well as inverters. “The lithium-ion battery with an installed capacity of 56.4 MW / 112.9 MWh (two hours) will be the largest in the Nordic countries,” specifies the renewable energy producer.

It will be located 100 meters from Yllikkälä Power Reserve (30 MW / 30 MWh), Neoen’s first large battery in Finland. It will be connected to the Yllikkälä substation of Fingrid, the Finnish electricity transmission network operator, via an underground cable. Its commissioning is planned for the first half of 2025.

The battery will operate in Fingrid’s reserve markets. “It will participate in maintaining in real time the balance between electricity production and consumption, contributing to the effective improvement of the stability and reliability of the electricity system while facilitating the integration of new energy plants renewable”, explains the French group.
