- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reversed the ouster of Defense Minister Joaw Galant.
- In view of the worsening security situation, Netanyahu said on Monday evening that he had decided to leave Galant in office.
- He and Galant would have settled their differences of opinion.
“We will work together for Israel’s security,” Netanyahu promised. The head of the right-wing religious government had dismissed Galant last month because he had called for a halt to the controversial restructuring of the judiciary.
There were immediately new protests on the streets against the dismissal. The opposition and experts criticized the sacking as unprofessional in view of the precarious security situation in Israel.
In Israel there have been protests against the restructuring of the judiciary for weeks. Netanyahu said these protests are partly responsible for the military escalation between Israel and its neighbors.
Netanyahu also said that he would stick to the restructuring of the judiciary, but wanted to try to achieve a broad consensus. Minority rights will be guaranteed.
The current Netanyahu government is more right-wing than any government before it. She has only been in office for three months. Overall, however, Netanyahu has been in office longer than any Israeli prime minister before.
