Netflix: advertising is coming (but not as you imagine)

Netflix has finally taken the plunge

Like millions of subscribers, you probably free yourself each month from the tidy sum of 17.99 euros to take advantage of your Netflix Premium subscription, the only one to allow (among other things) the sacrosanct Ultra HD 4K definition. Obviously, all the packages currently offered (Essential, Standard and Premium) are devoid of any advertising.

It was in Cannes, at the Lions festival, that Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, confirmed the imminent arrival of a new offer, which will include advertising. He clarified things: We are adding an option with advertising, but we are not adding ads to the Netflix you know today “.

Google in on it?

Concretely, Netflix will not add advertising to the already existing formulas, but should launch a new offer (possibly from the end of the year 2022), more affordable, which would include promotional messages. A way for the American giant to replenish the coffers, without frustrating its existing subscribers. According to some, this advertising offer could be added to the Essential offer, but nothing has been announced in this regard.

It remains to be seen now who will be the partners of Netflix with regard to these promotional messages to come, the group being in discussion (among others) with a certain Google. Netflix will also have to develop its advertising strategy: while ads will undoubtedly be broadcast upstream of the content, advertisements could interrupt certain programs for a few seconds.

Note that the Disney + platform would also consider offering a new offer including advertising. The big-eared SVOD service should broadcast four-minute advertisements for films or series that last an hour or less. Ads that will not be included in children’s content and that will be handpicked, in particular to avoid touching on topics such as alcohol or politics.
