Netflix cheaper with ads… but without offline viewing?

This summer, netflix announced the launch of a new, cheaper, ad-supported subscription. But obviously, watching ads will not be the only concession to make to pay Netflix less…

The video streaming platform has also reportedly considered preventing low-budget subscribers from downloading content for offline viewing.

Some sacrifices for a cheaper Netflix subscription

It’s no longer a secret that Netflix will soon be offering a new subscription made cheaper by showing ads during viewing. Most of the content on the platform will be available to subscribers to this program, but not all of it, since some, less popular, will be untraceable.

But that’s not all: Netflix also intends to prevent these subscribers from downloading their content. This discovery was made by developer Steve Moser through the code of the Netflix application on iPhone. It seems to show that the download will not be available at all for ad subscription users. The code also shows that they won’t be able to skip ads, but they can choose them.

Netflix replied that the subscription is still in the works, and that final decisions have not been made. ” This is all just speculation said a company representative.

Advertisements and downloading, an impossible household?

Several factors could explain this decision on the part of the streaming giant. First of all, maintaining ads on downloaded content presents major technical difficulties.

Hulu has had the same issue, and its ad-supported subscription doesn’t allow downloading offline content either. It would be necessary to download the advertisements at the same time as the content, and change them regularly, or else allow users to watch without ads once the content has been downloaded, which completely contradicts the initial objective.

Preventing subscribers from downloading content could discourage potential customers of this service, as Netflix seeks to catch up after losing 970,000 subscribers since the start of 2022.
