Did “Terminator” franchise creator James Cameron work on the animated series “Terminator Zero” now available on Netflix?
Netflix unveiled its highly anticipated animated series Terminator Zero on Thursday, August 29. Derived from the famous Terminator film franchise, although not a direct continuation of the six films, this American-Japanese production offers a new look at the science fiction saga created by James Cameron.
Terminator movies are no longer popular
The Canadian filmmaker only directed the first two parts of the saga. The other films were shot without him, but with Arnold Schwarzenegger (with the exception of the fourth installment Terminator Salvation, shot during his term as governor of California).
Despite this, James Cameron has remained protective of the future of his franchise, even though no film has managed to live up to his first two features. This was notably the case with the most recent installment Terminator Dark Fate, a fiasco that earned him a disavowal from its director Tim Miller (the original Deadpool).
“An obvious curiosity”
At the same time, James Cameron is a huge fan of Japanese animation. He has also fulfilled a long-held dream by producing the film Alita: Battle Angel (directed by Robert Rodriguez), a live-action adaptation of the cult manga, Gunnm. Although he did not work on the Terminator Zero series, he is looking forward to discovering it as a simple “fan” :
“That sounds interesting. My take on this show is that it’s a lot like The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Other people are making up stories that take place in a world that I made up. So yeah, I’m interested.” he commented on the microphone of Hollywood Reporter. “What is their vision of this universe? What did they want to tell and explore? Where are they going to go?”
Evoking a “obvious curiosity, but not burning” At the idea of discovering the series, James Cameron reveals during this same interview that he is working on other Terminator projects. And confirms in passing that there will be no link between these new versions developed by the filmmaker, and the Netflix series to which he nevertheless wishes to “meet success”.
The Terminator Zero animated series is now available exclusively on Netflix.
