Another series canceled by Netflix
The new series from Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, co-creators of the acclaimed Darkwill not have had time to find its audience. “It is with a heavy heart that I must announce to you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to end this incredible journey with a second and third season, like we did for Dark”the duo said via an Instagram post.
Amazing news, especially since the program had received largely positive reviews and boasted great audiences. 1899 had thus recorded 1.111 billion minutes viewed in its first month of operation, and had even exceeded even season 5 of the popular series The Crown.
As a reminder, 1899 narrates the journey of multinational immigrants sailing aboard an ocean liner bound for America. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they encounter a drifting ship in the open sea, missing for months.
If at Digital We weren’t convinced by the rough writing and the rough acting of the actors, we must admit that the series offered a neat atmosphere and a rather promising supernatural and mysterious plot. And it’s always a shame to see yet another program interrupted just a few weeks after its release. A usual operation for Netflix: among the series recently sacrificed by the streaming platform, we can cite the excellent Archives 81but also The Midnight Club, resident Evil, SpaceForce, On the Verge or Blockbuster.
If most of these series were indeed not popular enough to claim a sequel, it is regrettable that the use of cancellation has become too systematic. A series is something that is built over time, with stories set in place over several seasons, and these interruptions to promising shows become frustrating for subscribers over time.
In 2022, 23 series were officially canceled by Netflix, but dozens more went into limbo, without any information about their termination or a possible renewal.
