If you use Netflix, prepare for change. There streaming platform has started testing the biggest overhaul of its TV app in ten years.
“ We often see our members doing gymnastics with their eyes as they go through the at-home experience. We really wanted them to have an easier time determining if a title was right for them “, explained Pat Flemming, senior director of products at Netflix, to The Verge. You should expect two major new features, which may initially surprise regulars of the service.
Goodbye sidebar and static tiles
The update will therefore remove the menu that appears on the left side of the home page. It will be replaced by a more refined selection of options at the top of your screen: search, home, series, movies, and My Netflix. This last option, already introduced on the mobile application, includes recommendations, as well as quick access to titles that you have recently viewed or saved. You will always be able to access the different categories directly from the search tab. The recommendation algorithm will remain unchanged.
Furthermore, the platform has decided to replace the static tiles offering films and series to make them dynamic. When your remote control goes to a map, it will enlarge and broadcast a short preview of the work directly. Information like synopsis, release year, genre, etc. will be displayed below the card, only if you select it first.
Testing on a sample of users before wider deployment
To experiment with this new format, however, you will need to be patient. Only a handful of people out of Netflix’s 270 million users will have access to this revamped version to begin with. The service will take into account the feedback from the first testers to make possible improvements. The update will then be rolled out more widely.
For several months, Netflix has been emphasizing the engagement of its users, a decision linked to the deployment of its advertising-supported offering, which has been an explosive success. The company now considers it the best indicator of customer satisfaction. By giving its TV app a facelift, it intends to continue its momentum to maximize this trend.
