Netflix Games acquires Spry Fox (Cozy Grove, Road not Taken)

netflix is arming itself to influence the video game market in the years to come, with mobiles certainly in its sights. Next Games, Night School and Boss Fight now belong to him, and he has opened a studio in Helsinki run by Marko Lastikka (formerly of Zynga) and another in California led by Chacko Sonny (Overwatch) those last weeks.

We now learn thatit has just acquired another entity, Spry Fox. The studio behind accessible games like Road Not Taken, Alpha Bear and Realm of the Mad God had great success last year with the release of the simulation game Cozy Grove. He is currently working on a sequel, as well as a MMOs non-violent which was supposed to be edited by Epic Games : the future of this partnership is uncertain, but not necessarily impossible. In any case, the team based in Seattle since 2010 will now have the funds to carry out its projects with less pressure, while retaining its creative freedom.

We are very pleased to announce that Spry Fox is joining Netflix, where we will become the sixth in-house game studio!

What does this mean for Spry Fox? That means :

  • We can continue to make the games we were already making and wanted to make, but with more support and resources to improve those games and bring them to more people around the world;
  • We can stop stressing about how our games generate profits on our games and focus exclusively on making them as enjoyable and fulfilling as possible for our players;
  • We can collaborate with other creatives within Netflix to hopefully improve what we do and how we do it.

And what does this mean for our existing games? They will remain downloadable and available in their current form on their current platforms. What about development efforts on new games? Everyone at Spry Fox was already focused on making Cozy Grove 2 as well as a larger, non-violent MMO that we still haven’t revealed much publicly about, and still do. So there is no change in our current development efforts.

Real Talk: We’ve been in this business for nearly 13 years. It has been exhilarating, formative, infinitely interesting and often challenging. We’ve always known that above all else, we want our games to bring people happiness. But in other ways, it feels like it’s only recently that we figured out what “we want to be when we grow up.” What has become clear over all of our adventures is that we are a studio that builds world-class original and comfortable games. Especially games that bring people together. And we’re confident that Netflix will help us do that.

Thank you to everyone – our fans, our partners, and especially each of our past and present team members – who have helped us reach this milestone. We are always grateful to you.

Cozy Grove is notably available from €13.99 on theeShop Nintendo Switch: you can get gift cards to replenish your account on Amazon.co.uk.
