“Disenchanted” Matt Groening’s animated fantasy series returns on September 1 for a fifth and final season on Netflix.

It’s almost time to say goodbye to Disenchanted. Netflix has announced that The Simpsons creator Matt Groening’s animated comedy has been renewed for a fifth and final season which will debut on September 1.

The series first landed on Netflix with a 20-episode order before being renewed in 2018 for a second salvo of 20 episodes. Rather than designating each batch of 10 episodes as a season, Netflix split orders and billed each batch as a “part,” a tactic many broadcasters employ in an attempt to avoid standard pay raises for creators and stars. The fifth “part” will therefore end with 10 other episodes, we learn The Hollywood Reporter.

Produced in-house by Netflix, Disenchantment is Matt Groening’s first animated series since The Simpsons and Futurama, the latter of which has returned to Disney+ with a brand new season after a 10-year absence. We immediately recognize Groening’s touch in each of the three series with this characteristic way of drawing his characters.

Unlike Futurama, which returns from the dead for the second time and unlike The Simpsons, which was renewed by Fox until the 36th season, Disenchanted will have had a much shorter lifespan than its elders. A duration to put into perspective because five seasons is an eternity according to Netflix standards! The platform has renewed it every year with the regularity of a metronome, except for the year 2020 for the reasons that we know.

As a reminder, the plot of Disenchanted takes place in the medieval kingdom of Dreamland, a place where the only limit is your imagination. At the heart of the action, we find the young princess named Bean – voiced in the original version by Abbi Jacobson – far from the stereotypical representations of the princesses of fairy tales.

She prefers to drown herself in alcohol and collects chess. Bean is a big disappointment to her father King Zog with whom she has a rocky relationship. After his mother Dagmar was petrified years ago, the King remarried and cares more for his new wife Oona and son Derek than Bean. Let’s hope for the young woman that season 5 offers her a satisfactory conclusion.
