Customizing your subtitles on the Netflix TV app is now possible: good news for everyone, and especially people with visual impairments.
If you love watching Netflix on your TV, then you might highly appreciate the brand new feature that has recently rolled out globally: customizing subtitles, which previously wasn’t possible, we learn. TechCrunch.
A total of three subtitle sizes are available: small, medium, and large. Different styles have also been introduced: white text on black background, black text on white background, yellow text on black background and drop shadow.
Practical in more ways than one
Deployed worldwide since March 8, 2023, this function is interesting in more ways than one. First, it allows you to better customize the subtitles according to the tastes and colors of each and everyone. It’s pure customization.
Two, it can provide a relevant solution for people with visual problems. Enlarging the subtitles to the maximum for myopic people is now totally possible, especially if your TV is far from your sofa.
A little catch-up
To provide some context, TechCrunch mentions a study by Conviva, specializing in streaming data analysis. According to her, streaming content watched on large screens – i.e. televisions – represented 77% of the minutes broadcast worldwide in the first quarter of 2022.
It therefore makes sense to optimize the user experience on this type of device in view of the advanced figures. Incidentally, Netflix is catching up with the competition, which already offers this type of option: from Prime Video to Disney + via Paramount +, to name a few.
