Netflix launches new movies and series every month. September has it all, with a potentially scandalous film and a modern reinterpretation of a literary classic that’s not for the faint of heart.
There are around 200 million subscribers worldwide – it is important to inspire them anew every month. Netflix also regularly blows a lot of money into the production of content – for example, it was eight billion US dollars in 2018 alone. The streaming service wants to offer its customers exclusive series, films and documentaries. The “Netflix Original” label has long since become a quality brand.
Below is an overview of the new releases and highlights in September.

Netflix: Four highlights in September 2022
“Blond”: scandal film about acting icon Marilyn Monroe – with Ana de Armas
With “Blond” a film will be released in September that already has what it takes to become a scandal: the title, which deals with the life of sex symbol and acting icon Marilyn Monroe (Ana de Armas), does not have one in the USA Youth rating received – a rating that is extremely rare there and is usually only given for depictions of extreme violence or explicit sex scenes. In the original book, which decorates Monroe’s life with fictional elements, however, a rape is described – could the scene be the reason for the unusual age rating?
“Blonde” will be released on Netflix on September 28th. It remains to be seen whether director Andrew Dominik can convince viewers and critics with the scandalous film.
“Scandal! The fall of Wirecard” – documentary about the biggest economic crime since the Second World War
It is considered the biggest financial scandal in Europe since the end of the Second World War – the fraud case of the financial service provider Wirecard. Once a beacon of hope and a shining star in the sky for German tech companies, the service provider’s shares plummeted after a British journalist revealed that Wirecard had faked sales worth billions. Bankruptcy came a little later. The Munich public prosecutor’s office brought charges against the former CEO Markus Braun, CEO Jan Marsalek went into hiding – probably in Russia – and has since been wanted by an international arrest warrant.
In “Scandal! The Fall of Wirecard” Netflix rolls up the economic thriller again. The documentary will be available from September 16th.
“The Perfumer” – Modern reinterpretation of the literary classic “The Perfume”
With “The Perfumer”, TV director Nils Willbrandt (Ferdinand von Schirach: Enemies) launches a modern reinterpretation of the literary classic “The Perfume”. In 2006, star director Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, Cloud Atlas) filmed the material. The reinterpretation now brings the plot into the present and knits a detective story around a detective who gets involved with a perfumer. He has an incredible sense of smell – and does not shy away from murder for his goals.
With neon colors and highly stylized images, “The Perfumer” has a decidedly modern look. Whether the reinterpretation can convince will be seen on September 21st when the film starts on Netflix.
“The Empress” – series adaptation of the life of the fairytale princess “Sisi” at the Viennese court
She was considered one of the most beautiful women of her time, cultivated a pronounced body cult – and became Empress of Austria through her marriage to her cousin Franz Joseph I: Elisabeth, better known as “Sisi”. In the Netflix series “The Empress,” showrunner Katharina Eyssen unfolds the story of the rebellious monarch, who gets caught up in a world of intrigue and tension at the Viennese court.
Season 1 of “The Empress” consists of six episodes and will be released on Netflix on September 29th. A continuation of the series is planned – should season 1 be successful.
