  • According to anime author Eiichirō Oda, the Netflix adaptation of “One Piece” is about to start.
  • He himself admits having had doubts about a successful implementation for a long time.
  • In an open letter, he tells fans more about working with Netflix.

Soon Luffy and the Straw Hat Gang are finally setting course for “One Piece” on Netflix. After the pirate crew has been chasing the legendary treasure of the pirate king Gold Roger for more than 1,000 episodes in the anime, this year the sails are set for the first time in a live-action adaptation. “One Piece” inventor Eiichirō Oda now shares information about the start and his doubts about the project in an open letter to fans.

He talks about working with the creators of the Netflix series and says there was even a time when he wondered if foreign production was even possible. Although he and the creators have the same goal and understanding of the “One Piece” universe, they come from different cultures, have different goals and approaches. That can be frustrating for both sides. But in the end, after hard work and long-term cooperation, they eventually found the same wavelength.

He also sees this as the last chance to let the whole world participate in the adventures of Luffy, Zoro, Nami and Co. After all, he is still active and can oversee the project. According to Netflix, the series is scheduled to start later this year, but according to Oda, this date is not set in stone:

Since then (2016), Netflix has put a tremendous amount of resources into the project. It was announced that the series would start in 2023, but I was promised that it wouldn’t start until I was happy with the result.

Eiichiro Oda

If you take this statement literally, the “One Piece” series on Netflix could still be postponed. It doesn’t look like that, however, judging by the closing words of Oda’s letter. With them he reveals that they are currently in the final production phase and are about to finish all eight episodes. Fans continue to view the live-action adaptation with mixed feelings and are unsure whether the crazy world of “One Piece” actually works with real actors. Nevertheless, many should be looking forward to the release of the series.

That Oda received this letter on May 4th Twitter published is no coincidence. A day later, the main character of “One Piece”, Monkey D. Luffy, finally has his birthday. As is well known, his original name is Monkey D. Luffy. So that you also know how to pronounce the name, actor Iñaki Godoy is on together with Netflix Twitter published a funny video on this topic:

And Iñaki Godoy should know, after all he’s slipping into the role of the future Pirate King in the upcoming Netflix series. There is still no exact start date for the live-action series, but Oda’s words give hope for a start in autumn.
