Netflix, Prime Video, Disney + … a tool to bypass 4K DRM made public for revenge

Usually shared on the sly, between pirates, scripts allowing to steal content directly from the main SVoD platforms rarely surface in public. In recent days, a user has nevertheless shared on GitHub code allowing them to bypass the DRM protections of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV + or even Disney +.

“Widevinedump” is the nickname of a user who quickly gained notoriety on GitHub. A few days ago, the interested party shared, on the platform open source from Microsoft, several download tools dedicated to the (illegal) capture of content on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV + and Disney +. The American platforms of SVoD Paramount + and HBO Max also seem to be concerned. These tools are based on code written to bypass anti-piracy measures and DRM protections. They are advanced enough to suck up Ultra HD movies and series, bypassing Google’s Widevine L1 DRM.

Without giving more details, TorrentFreak assures to have spoken to a source which confirms the authenticity of these scripts. The specialized site nevertheless indicates that the shared code seems old and is probably not the most secure. Remember that the use of these tools has a good chance of leading to a definitive ban from SVoD platforms and to potential prosecution.

Scripts shared publicly for revenge?

As TorrentFreak points out, Widevinedump does not systematically include the Content Decryption Module (CDM) in scripts it chooses to share in public. Necessary to capture content in 4K, this module is offered by the interested party… but this time at a charge. At least with one exception: it is present for free in one of the shares, but the latter would only be functional for a few days at most.

These illegal scripts for sucking content on SVoD platforms are not new, but they are quite rare to find in public access. Usually, hackers prefer to share them among themselves or trade them discreetly. If this type of code was leaked on GitHub, it would be simply because of an argument. “I leak the CDM to expose it and punish some idiots who think they are Lords of Discord“, Admitted Widevinedump. It remains to be seen how long GitHub will tolerate the presence of these blatantly illegal scripts on its platform.
