The streaming service Netflix surprisingly announces that the joint project with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Archewell Foundation has been stopped. The plans for the production of the first joint animated series “Pearl” were only announced in July 2021.

The project, with the working title “Pearl”, was to be a series about the adventures of a twelve-year-old girl who was shaped by historically significant women along the way. Meghan was on board as creator and executive producer. Co-producers included David Furnish, Elton John’s husband.

Nothing is known about the detailed reasons for the production stop. Since, in addition to “Pearl”, several other animated series are also affected by the latest Netflix business decisions, it is suspected that the platform is taking cost-cutting measures. The streaming market leader had recently recorded a quarter with falling user numbers. In addition to increasing competitive pressure, the consequences of the Ukraine war also had an impact on the balance sheet.

The cooperation remains
The former US actress (“Suits”) and the British prince still have a deal with Netflix about films, series and children’s offers with their “Archewell” foundation. A documentary series about a sports competition for war-disabled soldiers called “Invictus Games” launched by Prince Harry is also planned. The collaboration with “Archewell Productions” would be greatly appreciated and they would work together on a number of projects, Netflix told the German Press Agency.
