Known for films adapting comic book universes like Watchmen, Man of Steel Or Justice Leaguethe first 300 or the original Sucker PunchZack Snyder made his return as director in 2021 with Army of the Dead on the side of Netflix and it is again with the streaming giant that he joined forces to give birth to an ambitious science fiction universe, that of Rebel Moon. Split into two feature filmswe discovered a first glimpse of it during the summer during theOpening Night Live of the gamescom 2023which already testified to the scale of the project, at the crossroads between Star Wars And Screaming metal, among other inspirations. If the classic themes of revenge and insurrection of a small group of rebels are nothing new, the action scenes and the artistic direction will have no difficulty in interesting the curious. After a crash landing on a moon located at the edge of the galaxy, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a stranger with a mysterious past, begins a new life within a peaceful colony of farmers. But she soon becomes their only hope for survival when the tyrannical regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), discover that the peasants have unknowingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxe (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher), leaders of a fierce group of insurgents hunted by the Mother World.
Responsible for recruiting fighters willing to risk their lives to defend the people of Veldt, Kora and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman)a tender-hearted farmer who knows nothing about the realities of war, explore different worlds in search of the Bloodaxe, and along the way rally a small group of warriors who all share the same thirst for redemption : Kai (Charlie Hunnam), pilot and hitman, General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), legendary commander, Nemesis (Doona Bae), who wields the sword to perfection, Tarak (Staz Nair), captive with a royal past, and Milius (E. Duffy), resistance fighter. Back on Veldt, an ancient android named Jimmy (voiced by Anthony Hopkins in the original version) wakes up with a different mission. The heroes of this newly formed army will have to learn to trust each other and fight together before the forces of the Mother World come to wipe them all out.
Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire will be available from December 22 on Netflixwhile the Part 2: The Slasher will arrive on April 19, 2024. With such ambition, we already regret that it will not be released on the big screen in theaters. Note that a video game Rebel Moon is also in development.
