After months of speculation and feverish fan anticipation, the announcement finally came through: The Sandman, Neil Gaiman’s fantasy series released this summer on Netflix, has just been renewed for a second season. The announcement was made Wednesday evening.

“The Sandman will return“
While story details or precise episode counts are still unknown, Netflix has announced that Season 2 will be a “continuation of the world of The Sandman”. The announcement was accompanied by a video:

Its creator, Neil Gaiman, said he was delighted with the announcement: “Millions upon millions of people have welcomed, watched and loved The Sandman on Netflix, from established Sandman fans to simply curious people who have become obsessed with the Dream Lord, his family and their pursuits. Amazing to say that working with Netflix and Warner Bros., Allan Heinberg, David Goyer and I will bring even more stories from The Sandman to life.”.
The Sandman tells the story of Dream, the Sandman. After a century of captivity, this powerful cosmic being who controls our dream life must explore different worlds and temporal continuums to put an end to the chaos that his absence has brought about. The series is adapted from Neil Gaiman’s novels released between 1989 and 1996.

Released on August 5, The Sandman was an immediate critical and public success, permanently establishing itself in the top 10 of the streaming platform for seven weeks. The series seduced thanks to its fantastic universe served by a sublime artistic direction, its surprising narration and its five-star cast, which notably includes Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie (Game Of Thrones), David Thewlis (Harry Potter) and Boyd Holbrook (Logan).
Despite this plebiscite, its renewal was not guaranteed, in particular because of its large budget. With this decision, Netflix has just confirmed its desire to develop quality franchises over the long term, in line with Stranger Things or The Crown.
