Netflix: soon a radically different TV interface

The new look of Netflix on TV.

In order to better organize its increasingly important and varied content, but also to encourage its subscribers to remain so, Netflix regularly updates the interface of its applications. This time, the streaming service seems to be particularly interested in the case of its app on televisions. American media The Verge was able to get a taste of the potential future version. Indeed, this is currently a test deployed with a few users to collect feedback before a possible global deployment at an unknown date.

A redesigned Netflix TV interface

First of all, the pop-up menu previously displayed in the column on the left disappears. Instead, a bit like on mobile, four entries are displayed at the top: Home, Series, Movies and My Netflix. This last menu, which notably includes recommendations and quick access to recently launched or listed works, partially compensates for the disappearance of the My List, Categories or even Most Viewed New Releases entries. Categories are always available from the search bar.

The other big change concerns the tiles for films and series. Goodbye static blocks, hello tiles whose size increases as soon as the user passes over them with their remote control. Thus, Netflix launches a brief dynamic overview, while below useful information is displayed (synopsis, year of release, number of episodes, genre, etc.). Practical for seeing everything at once without having to go to the complete file.

A first change, but not the last

To justify this choice, Pat Flemming, senior director of products at Netflix, explains: “We often see our members doing gymnastics with their eyes as they scrutinize the at-home experience. We really wanted to make it easier for members to determine if a title is right for them.“And to add:”Consider this a first effort, our best initial change, for what we think will be a great new TV experience.
