Netflix: soon a US remake for Squid Game? With a great director at the helm?

The acclaimed and award-winning South Korean series may soon be entitled to its American remake and rumors speak of a certain director to take charge of the project…

In 2021, Netflix released one of its biggest series, Squid Game, which, in addition to receiving praise from critics and the public, has become a real social phenomenon and has quickly marked pop culture. The series was also the most popular ever broadcast on Netflix with 1.6 billion hours of viewing in just one month around the world: a record for the platform.

While the second season of the show is currently in development, a rumor that no one expected is making the rounds today, as reported by Comicbook.com. According to Jeff Sneider’s “The Hot Mic” podcast, Netflix could indeed develop an American remake of the series and at the controls of this potential project, we could find the director of Seven, Gone Girl or The Social Network: yes, David Fincher himself…

If it remains a rumor for the moment, the remake of such a series would be a real challenge for whoever would take care of it. To be continued.

THE SUCCESS OF THE WORRYING SERIES?

Last November, Lee Jung-jae, the interpreter of the now famous Seong Gi-hun, told IndieWire the lessons he had learned from the first season of Squid Game. The series has really struck a chord with viewers and the games it features have proven to be the perfect vehicle for the metaphors and story the show tells.

I’m happy about it, of course, but it’s bittersweet. Yes, it’s great that audiences are consuming Korean content all over the world. And they appreciate it. But if you think about the themes of Squid Game — how far we’re willing to go to accumulate personal wealth, the lengths people are forced to go — the fact that it’s resonated with so many people in the world is worrying.

SEASON 2: FILMING AND PLOT

While a second season was quickly ordered in the face of the success of the program, Lee Jung-jae revealed, during an interview with the daily Ilgan Sports, that the filming of it should begin this summer and last about 10 month. If that matches the filming time of the pandemic-delayed first season, the second season should take that long because its scale “is bigger.”

He then pointed out that his character had a lot to do in this second part. “As we all saw at the end of season 1, the main plot of season 2 will be revenge, and the key character who controlled how the games in season 1 worked was Lee Byung-hun, so it seems both of us being the central characters in this next story. In fact, this is my first time working with Lee Byung-hun. We worked on a drama called ‘White Nights 3.98’ at the time, but we didn’t have scenes together.”.

Season 1 of Squid Game is to be reviewed exclusively on Netflix.
