Users who share logins outside of their own household are a problem for Netflix. So the service could prevent this in the future.

Netflix is making a new attempt to restrict unauthorized account sharing. The streaming giant is about to launch a trial where main account holders can let users outside of their household watch for a fee.

Extra member for just under three dollars

According to the terms of use of the streaming service, sharing login data outside of your own household is actually prohibited. With the option to add “extra members”, Netflix users should be given the opportunity to share their account accordingly – if they pay “a little” more. This is announced by Chengyi Long, head of growth and innovation at Netflix.

The new feature will be tested first in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru in the coming weeks. And “a little” means around three US dollars for the time being, the equivalent of around 2.70 euros. If it is well received in the test countries, this option could also be introduced in other countries such as Germany.

“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams on our Standard and Premium plans,” writes Long. However, this would have created confusion about when and how Netflix could be shared.

Secondary accounts for up to two people – with their own profiles

With the new feature, members should now be able to “simply and securely” share their account by adding secondary accounts for up to two people. They don’t have to live in the household, but still get their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password. Netflix is also testing the possibility of having user profiles transferred to new accounts.
