Technology from Sennheiser

Developed by the Germans at Sennheiser, this AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio technology promises to “immersing the viewer in an unprecedented immersive experience through simple stereo speakers while carefully respecting the original surround or immersive mix”according to the press release.

Specifically, AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio is compatible with any stereo system and translates an immersive or original surround mix into two channels of audio, delivering a spatial experience beyond stereo. It thus transforms any speaker or stereo headset into spatialized sound, without any software or hardware update being required. Similar technology has already been available on Apple devices since last year.

This new sound rendering has been available since February 1, only for Premium subscribers, and on more than 700 titles in the Netflix catalog, including Stranger Things, Glass Onion: A story at loggerheads, The Watcher or Wednesday. The list of films and series available with this technology is available by typing “Spatial audio” in the Netflix search bar.

To better illustrate this sound rendering, Netflix released a video:

In addition to films and series available in Dolby Atmos sound, the catalog of spatial audio titles will also offer non-Atmos surround content. This will make it possible to process surround mixes via the AMBEO 2, and to unlock spatial sound on a greater quantity of Netflix films and series.

Netflix isn’t the only platform offering “cinematic” sound. Disney+ has recently offered DTS 5.1 sound for its IMAX Enhanced programs. New audio and video options certainly impressive, but which struggle to compensate for the increase in prices and the addition of handicapping restrictions for ergonomics.
