This troubleshooting guide tells you what to do when your Netflix stream is stuck. It is best to work through the suggested solutions one after the other and check whether the problem has been resolved before proceeding to the next step.

Restart Netflix app

The problem with the jerky Netflix stream just occurred for the first time and you don’t see a specific error message? Then it might be enough to simply restart the Netflix app on the Smart TV, Fire TV or other device.

Restart TV or streaming player

Restarting the Netflix app did not bring the desired success? Then you can try restarting the streaming hardware first. Depending on which device you are streaming on, there is a button on the remote control. If this is not the case, briefly disconnect the streaming player from the power supply. After a restart your problem could already be history.

Check WiFi connection

If restarting the app or your hardware didn’t help, check the platform settings to make sure you’re connected to the right WiFi network. Especially if you use Netflix via the browser, your computer automatically connecting to a hotspot without booked access can become a problem.

If the correct network has been selected, it is worth checking whether your hardware has good WiFi reception. At least half of the indicator bars should appear filled – at least three quarters of the maximum signal strength is even better.

Provide a better WiFi signal

If your WLAN signal strength is not great, you may be able to achieve something by reducing the distance between the WLAN router and the receiving device. If the distance cannot be significantly reduced and the reception is consistently weak, it might be worth using a separately available WiFi repeater to boost the signal. Before you order one, however, you can take further measures.

If your Internet speed is sufficient and only the WiFi signal is too weak and you do not want to use a repeater, a connection between the router and end device via LAN cable is a reliable solution in many cases. You can also cleverly hide this in a cable duct if it causes you aesthetic discomfort.

Restart home network

Is the Wi-Fi signal strength decent and still not much happening? Then restarting your home network could solve the problem. To do this, you disconnect the WLAN router from the power supply for about a minute and then plug it in again. A bit of patience is sometimes required until the connection has been established again. The device is usually ready when the lights on it stop flashing – you can find out more about this in the manual for your WLAN router.

Check internet connection

Your WiFi signal is good and the home network restarted and the Netflix stream is still hanging? Then it might not be your WLAN, but the Internet connection itself. Netzwelt offers you a quick free Internet speed test with which you can find out the download speed of your Internet connection.

If this is in the two to three-digit Mbit range, the connection should be sufficient to play Netflix streams without jerking. However, this also depends on other factors.

Occasionally there are disruptions and network failures due to construction work or technical problems. Our fault indicator informs you whether your provider is currently having problems in your area. Such outages rarely last longer than a few hours.

Throttle streaming quality

Despite a good WiFi signal, do you constantly have problems with faltering streams from Netflix and other providers and the Internet speed test shows you a mediocre connection at best? Then your connection may not be sufficient for a smooth stream in UHD quality.

In your Netflix settings, you can set the video quality to “Automatic” instead of “High” if this wasn’t already the case. Now the stream may no longer run in UHD resolution, but it is much smoother.

Incidentally, the difference between UHD and HD resolution on most end devices is not earth-shattering and you don’t miss much. If you have now bought a huge UHD television for the really big moments, you can switch to a higher tariff with your Internet provider, depending on availability, or you can find an offer for faster Internet elsewhere.

Reduce network load

If you have a stable broadband connection and flawless WiFi and the stream is still hanging, a large part of your download bandwidth may be being used by another device on the same connection.

If two of your brothers are in a multiplayer battle with PS5 and gaming PC and your mother wants to watch Netflix in UHD in another room, even with a slightly more generous connection, it can eventually become too much.

Or is a huge download running on your PC at the same time? The rule of thumb is: The fewer devices downloading data from the Internet at the same time, the smoother your Netflix stream will run. A large download may have to be paused for an hour if possible.
