Athena (September 23)
What is it about ? Called back from the front following the death of his youngest brother, who died following an alleged police intervention, Abdel finds his family torn apart. Between the desire for revenge of his little brother Karim and the business in danger of his big brother dealer Moktar, he tries to calm the tensions. Minute after minute, the Athena city is transformed into a fortified castle, the scene of a family and collective tragedy to come. What there is to know ? It is most likely a great moment of cinema that Netflix will offer us on September 23 with Athena, a dive into a city set on fire and bloodshed after the death of a young boy. A film directed by Romain Gavras (The world is yours) and thought like a Greek tragedy, with its rise in power and its rather remarkable soundtrack. The trailer did not fail to ignite the debates and create a little buzz. It remains to be seen whether the end result will be up to par.
Blonde (September 28)
What is it about ? Audacious reinterpretation of the trajectory of Marilyn Monroe, one of the most timeless Hollywood icons. From her tumultuous childhood to her meteoric rise and complex love stories – from Norma Jeane to Marilyn – this film blurs the line between fact and fiction to explore the ever-widening gap between her public persona and the person she is. she was intimate.
What there is to know ? As the synopsis suggests, Blonde is not a biopic strictly speaking of Marilyn Monroe but it appropriates key moments of her life. It is more precisely an adaptation of the bestseller by Joyce Carol Oates who had fun dismantling and understanding the myth around this character who continues to fascinate even after his death. It was Ana de Armas who had the daunting task of fitting into Monroe’s ruffled white dress. The trailer, as well as the few shots unveiled by Netflix, testify to the disturbing resemblance between the two women.
The Midnight Club (October 7)
What is it about ? In a hospital reserved for adolescents with serious pathologies, patients meet every evening at midnight to share scary stories.
What there is to know ? When Mike Flanagan proposes a new series, we are always there. Especially after the excellent The Haunting of and the no less intriguing Midnight Mass. The King of Horror adapts on this occasion the novel for young adults by Christopher Pike and offers us a new camera, a theater of paranormal and… frightening events.
The School of Good and Evil (October 21)
What is it about ? In this modern fairy tale, best friends Sophie and Agatha find themselves on opposite sides when they are forced into an enchanted school that trains heroes and villains to maintain the balance between good and evil. .
What there is to know ? It’s a nice cast that Netflix offers us with The School of Good and Evil, a fantastic and family film adapted from the eponymous literary saga. The two heroines will give the reply to Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Michelle Yeoh, Laurence Fishburne or even Ben Kingsley… The whole thing is directed by the very elegant Paul Feig to whom we owe in particular My best friends and In the shadows of Emily. If success is there, this feature film could well be the start of a lucrative franchise for the platform since there are 7 volumes.
Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (from October 25)
What is it about ? An anthology on the theme of horror created by Guillermo del Toro, each episode of which will be signed by a different director.
What there is to know ? Netflix gave the Mexican filmmaker a free hand with this rather enticing project. The latter personally chose the directors and the short stories adapted to the screen. We will find Lovecraft but also unpublished stories imagined by Del Toro.
