Netflix: the 7 best zombie series to watch according to viewers

1- The Walking Dead

Created by Glen Mazzara, Frank Darabont and Scott M. Gimple, with Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus and Jeffrey Dean Morgan

A group of survivors, hordes of zombies and yet “human” villains competing in cruelty: this is how The Walking Dead captured the hearts of millions of viewers from its debut in 2010. It all started when Rick Grimes woke up from a coma and discovers a changed world: zombies – called walkers in the series – have invaded everything and the few remaining humans are fighting a desperate fight to stay alive. Quickly at the head of a group of survivors, the former sheriff will have the heavy responsibility of trying to protect them.

Created by Frank Darabont, based on the comics by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead has shocked, captivated and enraged for twelve years now. The series has indeed never gone with dead hands and has been able to convey to its audience the dread and emotion of a terrible situation… with no apparent solution.

2- Ash vs Evil Dead

Created by Craig DiGregorio, Sam Raimi and Ivan Raimi, with Bruce Campbell, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo

Humor and horror, two opposing genres whose fusion is original and quirky: Ash vs Evil Dead is the perfect example. This completely crazy show will make you laugh and shiver, like Evil Dead, the film trilogy of which it is the sequel. With Sam Raimi once again at the controls, the series tells the continuation of the adventures of Ash Williams, an eternal Bruce Campbell, who, having become a store employee, has put his past as a demon hunter aside.

But 30 years later, following an incident, he was forced to step back. Rifle in hand and chainsaw on his wrist, he is back with the help of two inexperienced colleagues. Frightening, crazy and bloody, the series follows the codes of the genre – gore and brutality included – adding, as usual, black humor and insane situations. A demonic spectacle not to be missed.

3-Kingdom

Created by Kim Seong-hun, with Ji-hoon Ju, Ryu Seung-Ryong and Doona Bae

Zombies at the time of dynasties, you had to dare. Kingdom did. South Korean horror series rooted in the Joseon Period, it depicts a corrupt kingdom where famine is rife… and a strange epidemic that awakens the dead, ready to devour. The Crown Prince then investigates to discover the origin of this scourge.

Bold and captivating, Kingdom is Netflix’s first creation from South Korea, adapted by Kim Eun-hee from a comic book she herself had the idea. From its beginnings, the series surprised more than one. Its success is due in particular to its charismatic characters, its captivating political intrigue, and its grandiose sets and costumes. Renewing the zombie genre, this time placing it in a dark medieval era, Kingdom rewrites history: we dive into it and we believe in it.

4- iZombie

Created by Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, with Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin and Rahul Kohli

A young zombie woman works as a forensic scientist in order to mix business with pleasure and solve crimes while feeding on obsolete brains: this is the astonishing plot of this series created by Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars) and adapted from a comic book of the same name. Changed after a hectic evening, Liv Moore now has more than unexplained abilities: with each brain she consumes, she inherits the memories of the person to whom it belonged. She uses this gift to help the police and give meaning to her new “life”.

Full of humour, iZombie is a most original procedural series that turns the living dead into intelligent beings, passing almost unnoticed. Catchy, addictive and out of the ordinary, it is also worth seeing for its endearing characters, led by its funny, sensitive and charming zombie heroine played by the talented Rose McIver.

5- Z Nation

Created by Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler, with Kellita Smith, DJ Qualls and Keith Allan

Series B assumed to be taken in the second degree, with stereotypical characters, crazy humor and zombies in large quantities, Z Nation is a post-apocalyptic experience kitsch, to discover if it is not already done. In the series, it has been three years since the zombie virus destroyed the United States. However, one man is immune, a former prisoner who must now be carefully protected and transported to a laboratory on the other side of the country by a small group of survivors. Indeed, his blood might well save humanity.

So… be careful, Z Nation is a series not to be taken seriously. Rhythmic and effective, it is nevertheless absurd, incoherent and intentionally poorly played: so many “qualities” that we did not think we were looking for and which nevertheless make the series a perfect jubilant entertainment. Let us mention Black Summer, its prequel, which also seduced, yet adopting a radically different tone.

6- Santa Clarita Diet

Created by Victor Fresco, with Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant and Liv Hewson

Sheila and Joel, a couple of real estate agents, lead a quiet life with their teenage daughter in the quiet suburb of Santa Clarita, California. After a mysterious food poisoning, however, Sheila becomes a zombie. She now has only one desire: to feed on fresh flesh. But nothing like an understanding spouse to try to overcome such an ordeal.

Let’s be clear, Santa Clarita Diet looks like Desperate Housewives, undead as a bonus! Crazy as hell, it brings gore and insane dialogue to the sanitized world of the American suburbs, with its white picket fences and indiscreet neighbors. On the menu: laughter, blood, ridicule, detached limbs but above all perfect actors. We are of course talking about the shock duo Drew Barrymore / Timothy Olyphant, brilliant and hilarious in this quirky show.

7- All of Us Are Dead

Created by Sung-il Chun, with Chan-young Yoon, Ji-ho Park and Yi-Hyun Cho

South Korea now seems to know a lot about zombies. Adapted from the webtoon Now at Our School, the series takes place in a high school which, after a failed scientific experiment, is invaded by zombies. The students, then trapped within the walls of the establishment, must fight and show ingenuity to try to survive this madcap attack.

The horror teen show took the platform by storm in January 2022 and quickly convinced its audience with its realism, suspense, successful special effects, modernized hordes of the living dead and its most passionate plot. The teenage drama has managed to mix love and friendship stories, and psychology and bloody scenes, enough to delight fans of these opposite genres. Captivating, unpredictable and thrilling, All of Us Are Dead refreshes the zombie genre and has certainly not finished talking about it.
