Netflix, the most downloaded streaming application in 2021

The ranking produced by Apptopia reveals that Netflix was downloaded 173 million times worldwide in 2021, ahead of Youtube and its 166 million downloads. In the streamer family, Disney + is in 3rd position with 126 million downloads, just ahead of Amazon Prime Video and 120 million units. Globally, we note the appearance of the AVOD / FAST application from ViacomCBS, Pluto TV with 54 million downloads. HBO Max ranks 7th with 73 million downloads and significantly lower global reach than the streamers ranked ahead of it.

Intense American competition

The American situation is quite different from that of the rest of the world: first because the competition between streamers is fierce, then because several applications are only present in this market. In the United States, Netflix is overtaken by HBO Max and its 46 million downloaded applications. Disney + is behind Netflix. Then there are services only present in the United States for the moment: Peacock from NBCUniversal and Hulu from The Walt Disney Company. The surprise comes from Tubi and its 28 million downloads. Tubi is an offer of AVOD, an ad-supported video service acquired by Fox in May 2020; the application confirms the growth of video on demand offers financed by advertising.

Netflix and Disney in battle for first place in France

For France Apptopia publishes a ranking by OS. On iOS, Netflix comes first, ahead of Disney + and Amazon Prime. Then, there are three French services: myCanal, Salto and myTF1. Molotov and 6play complete the ranking.

On Android, the French ranking is different: it is Disney + which comes first, ahead of Netflix and Pluto TV which takes the third step of the podium. Then we find Molotov, myCanal and Salto. Unlike iOS, there is no trace of applications from traditional TV channels at the top of the ranking.
