Summer isn’t over yet, but it’s back to school time. If sunny beaches are now only a distant memory, Netflix offers an alternative to extend the holidays: a dive into the Greek islands to the rhythm of ABBA songs for a crazy family story.
Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, Mamma Mia! joins the platform’s catalog from September 1st. Before being the classic that we know, the film is above all a musical comedy launched in 1999 and seen by more than 65 million spectators. Released in 2008, this film adaptation brings together a dream cast in a heavenly setting where comedy and drama mingle with frenzied choreography. Something to make you forget the back-to-school blues.
The story follows Donna, who owns a hotel on the island of Kalokairi. Anxious, she prepares to marry her daughter, Sophie. The latter decides to invite three men who have known her mother years before. She is convinced that one of them is her father. The strangers answer the call and go to the scene to meet their former childhood sweetheart.

The main originality of Mamma Mia! lies in the use of the many hits of the ABBA group that accompany the plot. All songs were recorded by cast members for the occasion. The film also features famous performers in counter-intuitive roles. In the skin of the mother, Donna, we find the great Meryl Streep. Although it’s not her first comedy for the actress, she has never appeared so wild.
At his side, we also find Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski and Julie Walters. With a budget of 52 million dollars, the film collected more than 600 million worldwide. In France, Mamma Mia! attracts more than 1,400,000 spectators to theaters.
The success was such that a sequel was released 10 years later, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, with all cast members and singer Cher.
