Netflix: this Turkish film could be the platform’s next big success

Directed by Erdem Tepegöz, “The Ashes” is part of the emergence of Turkish productions which are flourishing on the platform, showing a more liberated image of the country’s women.

Among the new releases that enrich the Netflix catalog each week, we find numerous works from all over the world, from Poland (with 365 days) to South Korea (The Creature of Kyŏngsŏng) via Mexico (L ‘Elected). Turkey is not left out. Whether it is films or series, the country is seeing its film industry develop considerably thanks to successes like The Tailor.

An emancipated heroine

As for the latest additions, we find Les Cendres directed by Erdem Tepegöz. The story follows Gokce, wife of a director of a publishing house, who is bored with her daily life. When she discovers a strange manuscript, she plunges into memories – real or fabricated, that is the question – and sees her life as a couple collapse. The film focuses in particular on fictophilia, a term which refers to people who have sexual feelings and desires for fictional characters.

Between romantic romance and thriller, the film has all the ingredients of a future Netflix success – with the clichés of the genre as a bonus. Les Cendres depicts the image of an independent, emancipated heroine who takes control of her desire. This representation is interesting because it demonstrates the influence of the Netflix platform – an American company with Western values - on local fiction.

Female representations in Turkish fiction

However, in Turkey, the condition of women still remains very fragile. The re-election of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in May 2023 notably alerted feminist associations who have seen their rights regress for many years.

In this context, Turkish fiction, distributed by Netflix, provides another look at the country’s women through complex and varied portraits. Series like Bir Baskadir and The Gift have already dismantled this. To a certain extent, Les Cendres adds to this list of works which intend to give pride of place to female characters.

The Ashes is available on Netflix.
