Check out the first images from “The Piano Lesson,” Malcolm Washington’s adaptation of August Wilson’s play, starring John David Washington and Samuel L. Jackson, coming to Netflix in November.
The trailer for The Piano Lesson takes us into the heart of an intense family drama, where the past and the future collide violently. Directed by Malcolm Washington, son of the famous Denzel Washington, this film adapts the play by August Wilson, one of the greatest American playwrights. A work that explores the dilemmas of an African-American family facing a heritage loaded with history.
When the past weighs heavily
The plot follows Boy Willie, played by John David Washington, who returns home to sell a family piano engraved with images carved by an enslaved ancestor. For Boy Willie, the sale of the instrument represents an opportunity to build a better future.
On the other hand, her sister Berniece, played by Danielle Deadwyler, categorically refuses to part with this precious inheritance, seeing in this piano the last tangible link with their family past.
Samuel L. Jackson plays the uncle of the two protagonists, desperately trying to maintain peace within this family torn between the desire to free itself from a painful past and that of preserving an ancestral heritage.

A family affair behind the camera
The Piano Lesson is directed by Malcolm Washington, who is making his feature film debut. He directs his brother John David. And their father, Denzel, produces the film with Todd Black.
With this film, Malcolm Washington wants to illustrate the eternal conflict between memory and progress, a theme deeply rooted in the African-American experience. He expressed, in a statement, his personal connection to this story, stating:
“I too come from a long line of women and men, some of whom were born into slavery and then freed from it, and my life is possible because of the decisions, sacrifices and actions of each of them.“And to add: “In the words of Boy Willie, ‘I’m supposed to build on what they left me.’“
With a star-studded cast that also includes Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, and Corey Hawkins, The Piano Lesson promises to be a landmark film. It will be screened in select theaters in the United States – before going online on November 22 – a sign that the film is likely to be a contender for the Oscars.
