Netflix: what are the biggest successful films and series at the end of 2023?


With 121 million views, “The World After Us” tops views on Netflix for the second half of 2023, while “One Piece” tops views on the series side with 71.6 million views.

While the strike of screenwriters and actors in Hollywood has profoundly shaken up the line-ups of studios and platforms, the audience results for the second quarter of 2023 were awaited with apprehension. But the results are rather positive.

Dystopian thriller The World After Us was the most-watched film – and most popular title overall – on Netflix globally in the second half of 2023, while live-action anime-inspired series One Piece dominated the TV side.

These data come from the second edition of the Netflix bi-annual report, reflecting views on the platform from July to December 2023, covering 99% of all views on Netflix. Subscribers around the world watched approximately 90 billion hours of content on the platform in the second half of 2023, compared to 93 billion hours in the first half of the year.

Film side

Netflix published its first major data report covering the first half of 2023 last December. In this second report, released Thursday, the company added information on watch time and number of views (total hours watched divided by duration) and separated movies and series, in sync with its weekly Top lists. 10 and most popular content.

The World After Us, the fifth most popular film of all time on Netflix, generated 121 million views in just over three weeks after its premiere on December 8, 2023. The film, produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, among others, features an exceptional cast including Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali and Myha’la Herrold. Agent Stone, an action thriller starring Gal Gadot, has racked up nearly 110 million views in the second half of 2023.

Leo starring Adam Sandler, the platform’s biggest animated film to date, generated 96 million views after its November 11 release. And Nowhere, Netflix’s third most popular non-English language film, attracted 86 million views.

Series side

Among the series, One Piece, with nearly 72 million views, more than doubled the viewing of Netflix animated films and series. Next came the miniseries Who Is Erin Carter? (50.1 million), Lupine Part 3 (49.7 million), The Witcher season 3 (47.9 million) and Sex Education season 4 (46.3 million).

Additionally, according to Netflix analysis, Squid Game: The Challenge – the spin-off reality TV version of Squid Game (33 million views in the second half of 2023) – increased viewing of the Squid Game series by 34% , three years after the release of the latter!

Licensed titles have also continued to be popular on Netflix. Suits recorded 144 million views over its nine seasons in the second half of 2023, followed by Young Sheldon (88 million views), Grey’s Anatomy (51 million), Gossip Girl (49 million) and Gilmore Girls (45 million).
