Beauty (or beauty in French) is not just a statement about the main character or the subject of this feature film. This is the first name of the heroine of this film signed by the Nigerian director Andrew Dosunmu, a regular at Sundance. A fierce beauty who will find herself in the spotlight.
This new Netflix Original film follows a young black woman on the cusp of a promising singing career, living with her family in 1980s New Jersey, and finding herself torn between “between his family, his label and his girlfriend, each seeking to act as a guide on the path to fame” the official synopsis from Netflix tells us.

It’s hard not to recognize the trajectory or at least the beginning of Whitney Houston’s career, even in the looks worn by the main actress Gracie Marie Bradley. With this detail that the Houston family has never publicly acknowledged the romance of the singer who died in 2012 with the one who was officially her best friend and her personal assistant.
It is not surprising to see Lena Waithe writing this screenplay, she who so brilliantly reinterpreted with Aziz Ansari, Bergman’s series Scenes from Married Life with the third season of Master of None which features a couple of women who are tearing themselves apart to find each other better.
Here, the screenwriter recounts the beginnings of Whitney in her own way and tells her truth about the singer who would have been forced by the time and all those around her to hide and then give up her love story.
