Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is still in theaters and on Netflix, subscribers are enjoying another film starring Harrison Ford, a Sydney Pollack paranoid thriller titled Random Hearts or Shadow of Suspicion, released in November 1999 in France.

Internal affairs investigator for the Washington DC police department, William Van Den Broeck known as “Dutch” (H. Ford) discovers in the crash of a plane that his wife was among the passengers but under an assumed name. She apparently had a relationship with a man who turns out to be the husband of a congresswoman (Kristin Scott Thomas). Obviously, the drama hides a more complex affair than it seems…

The paranoid thriller genre is not new, but in the late 90s it experienced a resurgence of attraction for the studios, which released Arlington Road (Screen Gems), Eyes Wide Shut (Warner Bros), Enemy of State (Buena Vista Pictures Distribution) and Shadow of Suspicion (Columbia).

In the latter, we find in the cast Charles S. Dutton, Sydney Pollack himself, Richard Jenkins, Susanna Thompson, Edie Falco and a very young Kate Mara, who appears in the second feature film of his career.

If we can deplore that the point of view adopted is that of the policeman, where that of the member of Congress would have been preferable to make the film less “cold”, The Shadow of Suspicion holds thanks to the performances of its actors and the classic but solid staging of Pollack, who signs his penultimate film before The Interpreter with Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman.

In any case, Netflix viewers give him a chance, perhaps in a desire to discover an old Ford film or to see him again in an already known but solid thriller.
