On Dutch identity cards, the gender of the holder will no longer be displayed. A strong measure to limit discrimination.

In a few years, the Dutch identity card will no longer specify the gender of its holder, reports AFP. Ingrid van Engelshoven, the Minister for Empowerment, Education, Culture and Science said this was "useless" in a letter written to the parliament of the Netherlands. This measure should be implemented "from 2024/2025", but the gender will always be displayed on passports, something made compulsory by the European Union.

Ingrid van Engelshoven wishes "limit as far as possible the unnecessary mention of sex", remembering that "The Netherlands would not be the first [EU] member state to have an identity card without mention of gender. The German identity card does not mention sex". The inscription of the genus can indeed post problem to the intersex people, transgender, or even gender. With this measure, the minister wants Dutch citizens to be able tot "shape their own identity and live it in complete freedom and security".

"This is great news for people who have problems with this gender category on their ID cards day after day. And it's good news for anyone who thinks that what your underwear is hiding is not about neither the government nor the authorities ", reacted Dutch organizations defending the rights of homosexuals and other sexual minorities in a press release quoted by AFP. In 2018, the Netherlands had already taken a step forward towards the recognition of a third sex when an intersexed Dutch woman had obtained justice to avoid the obligation to be registered as a woman or as a man on his birth certificate.
