In the season 4 episode of “New Amsterdam”, broadcast this evening on TF1, viewers finally discover what happened to doctor Vijay Kapoor.

The doctors of New Amsterdam will have to face a new tragedy. In episode 13 of season 4, broadcast this Wednesday evening at 10:50 p.m. on TF1, Max Goodwin, Helen Sharpe and the others will learn of the death of one of their own. Doctor Vijay Kapoor, played since the launch of the medical series in 2018 by Anupam Kher, will indeed die.
While she is in the middle of an argument with her partner, Helen (Freema Agyeman) receives a call that seems to deeply upset her. It is only at the very end of the episode that the mystery surrounding this phone call is resolved.
All the doctors come together around Ella to support her following the death of their friend, Doctor Vijay Kapoor. It is therefore off camera that viewers will have to say goodbye to this emblematic character of New Amsterdam.
As tragic as this death is, this departure is not really a surprise for fans of the medical series since Anupam Kher announced in April 2021 that he would not be back in the rest of season 3.
At the time, the actor cited personal reasons, his wife suffering from blood cancer. Following this ordeal, the actor decided to step away from the sets for a while. We must therefore believe that Anupam Kher has decided to say goodbye to New Amsterdam for good.
It was at the start of season 3 that the character appeared for the last time in the medical series. In the first two episodes, which were actually from the last episode of season 2 which had never been broadcast due to Covid, Kapoor fell ill, the victim of a deadly flu epidemic.
In episode 7 of the same season, viewers learned, via Iggy (Tyler Labine), that the doctor had decided to resign from New Amsterdam following his fight against Covid which almost cost him his life since he had to undergo open heart surgery and a long period of rehabilitation which prevented him from returning to his post at the head of the neurosurgery department.
We must therefore believe that the screenwriters have chosen to close the door to a possible return of Anupam Kher in the sequel to New Amsterdam.
