After the death of doctor Vijay Kapoor (Anupam Kher) last January, the doctors of New Amsterdam will soon have to face a new tragedy. In episode 17 of season 4, broadcast last night in the United States, Max (Ryan Eggold) and Helen (Freema Agyeman) took a big step forward in their relationship before suffering a devastating blow of fate.

After the previous week’s cliffhanger, viewers discover that Helen, Casey, Dr. Wilder, Dr. Castries and Trevor, were drugged by a bartender angry at the impact the Covid outbreak has had on his trade.

According to him, health professionals exaggerated the effects of the disease, when it was only a bad cold. In revenge, he spiked the doctors group’s drinks.

Max, who finds Helen unconscious on the ground, rushes her to the hospital where the doctors discover that the young woman has numerous blood clots throughout her body. To save her, they recommend having a hysterectomy.

While Max insists that Helen undergo this operation which could save her life, she explains to him that this intervention will fundamentally change her personality and that it will prevent her from having children.

She finally chooses to have recourse to a much riskier treatment which will eliminate certain clots. But nothing goes as planned, and Helen must undergo an emergency operation. When she wakes up, at the end of the episode, she struggles to line up two words…

She suffered a serious cardiovascular accident.” explained David Schulner, showrunner of the series, to our colleagues from TV Line.

The doctor lost her ability to speak and “we don’t know if she will ever be able to find heradded executive producer Peter Horton. “[Cela] could take a week, two years, or maybe she can never get there. That’s the whole point of this story..”

A drama that will place Helen and Max in front of a problem that they had never had to face before. “It’s so easy when you’re in love with someone and the future is in front of you, everything is possible and you’ve already imagined your future in your head.,” explained Peter Horton.

And then suddenly, for one reason or another, someone in the relationship may not be able to match the imagination of that relationship. What effect will this have? What is love under these conditions? What is dedication and faithfulness when this happens? These are, to some extent, questions that Max will have to answer.“

Deprogrammed last December for lack of audience, the end of season 3 of New Amsterdam should be broadcast soon on TF1. The first two seasons of the medical series are available in full on Netflix.
