Clearly, Google seems to have problems with its smartphone ranges. A new rather annoying bug completely limits access to the storage of Pixel mobiles.

Software tracking can sometimes become a headache and Google is a perfect example. The search giant has deployed an update to the Google Play system which is causing some Pixel smartphones to bug. On Reddit, several Internet users have complained about no longer being able to access their phone’s internal storage, practically rendering the device unusable, since applications can no longer read or write anything to the memory.

Pixel 6, 7 and 8 affected

Therefore, people affected by this bug can no longer take photos, play audio files stored on memory or even launch certain applications. The problem seems to affect many people since Reddit has more than ten threads reporting the same problem. It appears that this affects the Pixel 6, 7 and 8.

Fortunately, not all Made in Google phone owners are affected. It appears that this bug is due to the deployment of the January 2024 update to the Google Play system. This set of software services, not to be confused with monthly security updates, is supposed to bring new features to phones and keep them running smoothly… not cause critical bugs that render the phone unusable.

How to check Google Play version?

IF you want to check the version of Google Play system running on your phone, go to the Settings appopen the section Security and Privacy Then System and updates and choose Google Play System Update. If you’re still on the November release (like many Pixel owners), then you have nothing to worry about. Google admitted “ be aware of the problem and seek the solution “. The deployment of the update should therefore be stopped.

Even if this bug does not seem to affect a lot of people, the image is catastrophic for Google and its range of Pixel phones which had already experienced a bug of the same type last November. At the time, the company deployed a fix several long weeks after the problem was identified and some owners lost all their data along the way. Let’s hope that Google manages to do better this time.
