What is this wave about besides the group name? Many of you are probably wondering these days. In groups with more than 32 people, WhatsApp now displays a new button in the header area that is marked with a wave symbol.
If you press it, you start a voice chat in which everyone in the group can participate. The function is similar to corresponding chats on Discord. Unlike a call, your cell phone will not ring, but you will receive a push notification, which you may be informed of with a vibration tone. The notification will be sent even if you have muted the group.
Voice chats started accidentally are annoying
The feature has met with mixed reactions in the WhatsApp community. There are mainly negative comments about this on X (formerly Twitter). The reason for this is that many people press the button accidentally or out of curiosity and thereby contact the entire group for no reason.

Also find it annoying some that the feature cannot be deactivated by group admins. It remains to be seen whether WhatsApp will add a corresponding function later.
