New CAC 40 record: the reasons for a historic surge

DECRYPTION – Driven by the good results of its champions, the flagship index of the Paris Stock Exchange exceeded its previous peak of January 5, 2022.

The Paris Stock Exchange has never experienced such a party at the start of the year. The CAC 40 climbed to 7387.29 points late Thursday morning. It has soared by nearly 14% since January 1. Since its bottom at the end of September, when it had fallen to almost 5,600 points, the flagship index has offered itself a formidable rebound of more than 30%. The euphoria is almost general. After suffering a lot last year, the American Nasdaq, rich in technology stocks, has already won more than 15% in 2023. The Dax of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange has climbed more than 12% since the start of the year and the Eurostoxx posted a rise of 13.5%.

How to explain such euphoria? Markets had sunk into excessive pessimism in September. However, the darkest scenarios that prevailed at the end of the summer have gradually evaporated. Investors feared a global recession fueled by the restrictive monetary policies of the world’s major central banks…
