New Caledonia: Darmanin wants to work in a “constructive” way, according to a non-independence party

Gérald Darmanin showed Thursday, October 27 his determination to work in a way “constructive and openon the New Caledonian file, assured one of the non-independence parties, ahead of a meeting of the Conference of Partners on Friday at Matignon.

Following a bilateral meeting between the Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories and the non-independence parties, the former deputy of the Calédonie ensemble party (center right) Philippe Gomès told AFP that the minister tookthe case head-on in a constructive and open manner. He understood that on this file, as in 1988 and 1998, if we do not build a local political consensus we will not be able to move forward“.

Boycotted referendum

Gérald Darmanin was also to receive the independence camp bilaterally, but the latter refused to make the trip to Paris. The representatives of the Caledonian Republicans, the Rassemblement-LR, Génération NC, and the Caledonian Popular Movement for their part submitted a joint declaration to the minister.

In the third and last referendum on independence organized in December 2021, which the separatists had boycotted, the “Nopeat independence won 96.5% of the vote. Generation NC loyalist deputy Nicolas Metzdorf (Renaissance), said he was satisfied to see that the minister had “committed to the democratic result of the three referendums, that is to say that New Caledonia was French and would remain so“.

Absence of separatists

Gérald Darmanin, according to Nicolas Metzdorf, indicated that he “regretted“the absence of the separatists, “but that should not prevent the State from moving forward on the work concerning the future statute, that the door remained open to separatists obviously throughout the process, but that we had to move forward“. Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne has planned to bring together all the institutional actors of the archipelago on Friday in Matignon, during a Convention of Partners, which will also take place without the separatists.

The Kanak and Socialist Liberation Front (FLNKS) is conspicuously absent from the meetings. The Palika, one of the member parties of the FLNKS, questioned Thursday in a press release, on “the political scope of the resolutions that could be taken at the end of the exchanges as well as their implementation in the absence of the separatist representation“.

The Palika, not invited as its own organization, will not go to Paris“, adds the text. He reiterates “however its desire for dialogue and therefore requests a meeting with the State as soon as possible, in line with the commitments made by its representatives during the visit of the Minister Delegate for Overseas», Jean-François Carenco in September.
