PARIS (Reuters) – Exchanges of fire at a roadblock left one dead and two seriously injured in New Caledonia on Saturday as part of the violence shaking the Pacific archipelago, we learned from the gendarmerie.

The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. (local time) in the town of Kaala-Gomen, in the north of the main island of New Caledonia, a spokesperson said.

Six people have died since the start of the violence, fueled by a constitutional reform project aimed at extending the electoral body, frozen since the Nouméa agreement of 1998, to people residing for ten years in the archipelago.
