New Covid protocol in schools, which changes from Monday

Faced with a new outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic in France, the government is closely monitoring schools and has thus implemented new measures to stem the spread of the virus.

Teachers’ unions are warning against the spread of Covid-19 which continues to worsen in schools. The government wishes to keep the schools open, their closure is envisaged only in the event of‘”last resort” to slow down the third wave. However, new measures will apply from Monday March 29 in the 19 departments subject to enhanced protection. But then what will change from next week?

Class closure from the first positive case detected

Just like the kindergarten classes, those in elementary schools, middle schools and high schools will close as soon as possible. the detection of a case of Covid-19 and not more than three. The class will remain closed for “a duration of two to three weeks”, explained the Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer. The type of variant is no longer taken into account for the closure to be decided.

All the students in the class are considered as a contact case. Parents of students over 6 years old must have them tested at the end of the closure period. A certificate on the honor of carrying out a test and a negative result will be requested. In the absence of this, the student’s eviction from school will be maintained for a maximum period of 14 days. Parents who cannot telework can benefit from the partial activity, upon proof of health insurance or a certificate of class closure.

More resources to replace absent teachers

The Minister of Education recognized “tensions in certain territories “ on the replacement of absent teachers and promised new means to ensure that classes are held. According to him, “the rectorates concerned will be able to recruit more”. However, teachers’ unions assert that available replacements are increasingly scarce, so this issue will have to be taken into account.

Closing of canteens on a case-by-case basis

Canteens are places of contamination but they will be closed on a case-by-case basis. It will be up to the local authorities to decide in consultation with the National Education. “It is a measure which must be taken as a last resort when one thinks that it is essential in view of the local circumstances “, said Jean-Michel Blanquer in an interview with the newspaper The Parisian. It is important to leave the canteens as much as possible because “for many children, it is the only way to have a balanced meal during the day”.
