New credit card – Migros Bank alienates loyal Cumulus customers – News

The new Cumulus credit card is attracting a lot of interest, but there are still problems here and there.

Migros Bank has been issuing the Cumulus Visa credit card since July 1, 2022. Before that, the consumer credit bank Cembra Money Bank was the exhibitor. However, Migros has dissolved a corresponding partnership. However, the old Cumulus Mastercard should continue to be used in the same context without any problems until it expires.

Migros Bank is now trying to get as many of the more than 800,000 previous cardholders as possible to use their new offer. For its part, Cembra-Bank is trying to keep them going with the seamlessly available successor product “Certo Mastercard World”.

“High volume of deals”

When asked, both banks commented positively. A “high volume of transactions” has been recorded since July 1, write Migros and Migros-Bank at the request of the SRF consumer magazine “Espresso”.

It also sounds positive at Cembra: “The migration is going well.” However, exact figures are not available from either bank.

If you want to collect Cumulus points via credit card payment in the future, you can’t avoid applying for a new Migros Bank card online or via the app.

Rejection: “In individual cases”

Reports at “Espresso” show that things don’t always run smoothly. A couple got in touch – long-standing Migros customers and holders of the previous Cumulus Mastercard. Your application for a new Cumulus Visa card has been denied. But they don’t want to tell them why. The problem was reported several times at «Espresso».

The necessary regulatory checks and credit checks are carried out as part of the card application process.

Migros and Migros-Bank write “Espresso”: “As part of the card application process, the necessary regulatory checks and credit checks are carried out – not least to protect consumers.”

In individual cases, applications may be rejected – but these cases are not commented on publicly. However, the Migros Bank promises that the reasons will be disclosed to those affected.

That also happened in this case. The couple reports that the reason was a cross in the wrong place. The application form asks, among other things, whether the money paid with the credit card belongs solely to the applicant.

Since it has a joint fund, the couple ticked “No” here. In doing so, they would have apparently violated a provision in the law against money laundering.

Annoying error message

Another problem: A man from the canton of Glarus filled out the application for the new Cumulus credit card using Visa’s One app. He was almost done: “Then an error message came up.” Even after repeating it several times, he ended up in a dead end.

Migros-Bank admits that “in isolated cases, registration via the app did not work right away”. In the meantime, however, the problem has been resolved. It has now also worked for that customer.

And data protection?

Migros-Bank sends a receipt for the approved application as an e-mail attachment. With all personal data such as income and housing costs. How about data protection?

The bank refers to its extensive data protection declaration and writes that the customers would also agree to the use of their e-mail address for communication purposes in the terms of use.

Data protection expert Martin Steiger has no objections to this approach: on the whole, data security is well enough guaranteed here, he says when asked by “Espresso”.
