WASHINGTON (Reuters) – New negotiations on a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip in exchange for the release of hostages held by Hamas are planned for this weekend in Cairo, the White House said on Friday.

CIA Director William Burns will lead the American delegation, said a senior official in Joe Biden’s administration.

According to John Kirby, White House spokesperson for national security, the American president asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Thursday during a telephone interview, to give his negotiators decision-making power, so that a agreement can be reached as quickly as possible.

The most recent proposal under discussion at the end of March provided for a cessation of hostilities for six weeks in exchange for the release of around forty elderly, sick or injured Israeli Hamas hostages.
