Developers can now access the latest version of iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4 in beta. Apple’s latest version fixes several bugs and marks the arrival of new features. For the user, the update should be relatively seamless.
31 new emojis
On the occasion of this new update, Apple has detailed, classically, in a note to developers all the changes made.
On the visual side, users will know the arrival of Unicode 15.0 emojis. Thirty-one new little characters and actions land. Trembling face, pink heart, momentum and other pranks will spice up your conversations. Note that the recipient of the emoji must also have the latest update to view them. More practical, iOS 16.4 offers keyboards for new local languages (choctaw and chickasaw). Lastly, the Ukrainian keyboard now supports predictive text, the Korean keyboard autocorrect, and transliteration layouts (letter-to-letter matching) for Choctaw and Chickasaw speakers.
Change for Matter and web apps
On the connected home side, iOS 16.4 will offer the possibility of manually or automatically updating Matter devices. This new feature could allow you to update your accessories directly from Apple’s Home application, according to recent rumors.
Finally, perhaps the biggest new feature of iOS 16.4, WebKit, Safari’s rendering engine will allow notifications to be sent directly from web applications displayed on the home screen. The app wishing to send a push must ask the user for consent. “Notifications from web apps work just like notifications from other apps. They appear on the lock screen, in notification center and on a paired Apple Watch“, explains Apple in a note on what’s new in WebKit.
Like classic pushes, web notifications can be configured directly from the settings of the application concerned. The concentration modes will integrate, very logically, the new functionality to prevent the user from being overwhelmed. The novelty had been announced a long time ago, during WWDC 2022 (the annual developer conference).
