New entry regulation: Children particularly suffer from quarantine rules

A new entry regulation for trips to Germany has been in force since last Sunday. Anyone who comes back from vacation must be vaccinated, recovered or tested. For those who have not been vaccinated, the following applies: When entering from a high-risk area, such as Spain or the Netherlands currently, they have to be in quarantine for ten days, free testing is only possible after five days.

Sufficient vaccine is now available, but children cannot be immunized. The vaccines from Biontech and Moderna are only released from the age of twelve, a general vaccination recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) is only available for adults or children from risk groups.

Even if the parents are vaccinated, children have to be quarantined

Younger children who cannot be vaccinated are threatened with the quarantine trap: Even if the parents are vaccinated, “children of all ages – as before – have to go into quarantine,” says the Federal Ministry of Health. It makes no difference whether the parents are vaccinated or not. They are not allowed to go to daycare or school, which in many places should take place in attendance again after the holidays. After five days, the isolation ends automatically; children aged twelve do not have to take a test.

According to a decision by the EU Commission, “an exception should actually be made for children whose parents are exempt from quarantine in order to enable family vacations,” it says on the official website. For many parents, this should mean extra effort after the vacation, after all, the offspring have to be supervised.

The EU wanted exceptions – but they cannot be found again

Anyone entering from a virus variant area must generally be in quarantine for fourteen days, without the possibility of free testing. Vaccinated people are still affected by this regulation. You can find everything you need to know about the new rules here.
