New era Iger at Disney: all about the first decisions, the context and the issues

Thunderbolt in the world of entertainment with the return of Bob Iger at the helm of Disney. Update on the situation and the context to better understand this turnaround and what we can expect from it.

March 2015. It was the initial date of the announced retirement of Bob Iger, the emblematic boss of the mouse firm, successor in October 2005 to Michael Eisner. The adventures of the succession mean that, three times, this retirement will be postponed, to finally stop on the date of February 25, 2020 for the enthronement of another Bob at the head of Disney: Bob Chapek.

Between 2005 and 2020, in a pivotal period of digital transformation in the world of entertainment, the market capitalization of the Burbank group rose from 40 to 250 billion dollars… With the acquisition of Fox finalized in March 2019, Iger transmitted to Chapek a group that weighs virtually (based on 2019 figures) 40% of the US box office!

After a little over 30 months of Chapek’s reign, it was a rather complicated balance sheet that led to this resignation and this surprise return… On the last day of the Chapek era, the market capitalization had again reached the low in March 2020 (the day after the announcement of containment) around 160 billion dollars, after having crossed the 300 billion threshold at the start of 2021… The harder the fall will be! Markets welcomed the return of the Burbank Herald as it should, with the stock price rising 8% yesterday.
