new fundraising of $ 400 million for the Dataiku unicorn

The world of start-ups has this in common with the Olympic Games that, when it comes to winning a medal, it is not always in the jersey of the country that saw them born that the champions get their charm. Dataiku is an example. If the start-up specializing in data processing had not moved its headquarters to New York in 2016, three years after its creation, we could have said without hesitation that it was to sign, Thursday, August 5, the second most big fundraiser of the year for a young French startup: $ 400 million (337 million euros), behind Contentsquare ($ 500 million in May).

However, we will allow ourselves this facility, as the company’s ties with France remain strong. It retains its main office in Paris (300 of the company’s 750 employees), and concentrates 99% of its resources there on research and development. This year, she planned 250 hires in France.

“Go looking for the best teams, which there is potentially nowhere else”, this is the objective of this new fundraising, explains the founder and CEO of Dataiku, Florian Douetteau. With the stated ambition of “Create one of the software giants of tomorrow”, which will allow that “Data finally delivers its promise of value creation” by helping to make more informed decisions, specifies the leader.

Investors seduced

Because, if the data is considered the black gold of the XXIe century, it is still necessary to know how to extract it. While this knowledge is now reserved for a handful of experts, Dataiku is betting, through its solution, to democratize this skill. “Instead of a few people [les data scientists] who perform most of the value-added activities around data, our proposal is to allow almost everyone to do so, which changes the way of working ”, exhibits Florian Douetteau.

The proposal seems to convince. Since its last fundraising in August 2020 – $ 100 million – the number of its clients has grown from 300 to 450, with a wide variety of sectors represented (automotive, agri-food, health, etc.) and company sizes – even if it is the large international groups that “Accelerate in the most significant way” on the subject.
